Drink driving learner caught with passengers in boot

A 22-year-old Amaroo learner driver has been charged with a range of offences after being caught drink driving and travelling with passengers in the boot of his vehicle.

About 2.50am today, 16 June, ACT Policing Operations members monitoring CCTV observed five people enter a black Volvo parked on Alinga Street. At this time, a further two people climbed into the boot of the vehicle.

A short time later, police conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle on Northbourne Avenue.

The driver underwent a breath screening test which was positive for alcohol, and later returned a breath analysis of 0.177; as a learner driver, he was subject to a 0.00 alcohol limit.

A check of police records also found the vehicle’s registration was suspended due to an unpaid infringement.

The man has been ordered to surrender his licence, and will receive a court summons on charges of drink driving, drive suspended vehicle, learner driver unaccompanied, and unrestrained passengers.

Police also expect to issue infringement notices to the passengers found in the boot of the vehicle.
