Driver airlifted to Canberra Hospital after serious crash near Cooma

A motor vehicle crash near Cooma has left a driver seriously injured and four others with minor injuries.

Just before 7am yesterday 31 July, emergency services responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash on Kosciuszko Road, Cootralantra, approximately 7km north of Berridale and 25km south-west of Cooma.

Police have been told a white Subaru Liberty was traveling north and a white Subaru Impreza was headed south when they collided, causing both vehicles to spin out.

The impact pushed the hatchback into a creek drain, coming to a stop 20m away.

Witnesses stopped to render assistance, before officers attached to Monaro Police District arrived.

The driver of the sedan – a man aged 29 – was assessed at the scene by NSW Ambulance paramedics for leg injuries, before being airlifted to Canberra Hospital in a serious but stable condition, where he remains.

The driver of the hatchback, a woman aged 28 – and her three passengers – were taken to Cooma Hospital with minor injuries.

With an influx of traffic on local roads during the snow season, police are reminding motorists of the Four Ds: drink, drug, dangerous and distracted driving.

Snowfield conditions can be more difficult to navigate so police are asking everyone to prioritise safety on their journey to and from alpine regions – pay close attention to the roads, don’t get distracted and slow down.

As inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the crash continue, police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the crash, or has available dashcam footage, to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800-333-000.
