Local organisations can apply for funding for new outdoor equipment, building nature play spaces, or programs that encourage learning to ride a bike or camping.
The 2021 Nature Play Grants Program provides up to $15,000 to eligible organisations that keep the community active through outdoor play, and that use Canberra’s outdoor areas, open spaces and natural landscapes.
“It’s a great opportunity for Adventure and Outdoor Recreation groups to acquire new equipment,” Yvette Berry, Minister for Sport and Recreation, said.
Applications for the Nature Play Grants Program close on 6 April.
The ACT has the highest sport participation rates in the country, Ms Berry said; the ACT Government supports initiatives to break down barriers to participation, especially for women and girls.
“However, traditional sports don’t always meet the needs of Canberra’s diverse community, and meeting the daily physical activity recommendations can be a challenge,” she said.
“Between work, school, and family commitments, maintaining a consistent exercise routine can be difficult.”
The grants program will focus on applications that create opportunities for different preferences and changing lifestyles, and that support under-represented areas of the community.
“I encourage applicants to think outside the courts and to explore ways for the community to use Canberra’s great outdoor areas to get fit, play, go on adventures, and socialise,” Ms Berry said.
