Jack Wighton accepts two week ban for dangerous throw

Canberra have entered a guilty plea for Jack Wighton, meaning the star five-eighth will miss two weeks for his dangerous throw on Reece Walsh during the Raiders 21-20 loss to the Warriors.

Wighton avoided the sin bin for his tackle, but came under fire from the match review committee for lifting Walsh’s leg and sending him dangerously into the ground.

The suspension comes as a blow to both the Raiders’ season and Wighton’s State of Origin chances.

Without Wighton, the Raiders are likely to have to field Matt Frawley in the halves alongside rookie halfback Brad Schneider for their next two matches against the Bulldogs and Sharks.

Canberra are in the midst of a five-match losing streak and are already desperately missing No.7 Jamal Fogarty through injury after signing him from Gold Coast in the off-season.

The Raiders first match without Wighton will be back at home this Friday night against the Bulldogs who are fresh off their best win in ages, a 16-12 victory over the more fancied Roosters.

Wighton had been hoping to hang onto his Blues bench spot and is considered an outside chance to play at left centre with Latrell Mitchell likely out of Game I.

But his ban means he will have just two games back before Brad Fittler picks his team for the series opener on 8 June.
