Light rail disruption: Roads and car parks to shut in city

Car parks and roads will be closed in the city in coming weeks and months as the ACT Government constructs light rail stage 2A.

Coranderrk Street and Parkes Way intersection upgrade

Traffic lights will be installed at the roundabout intersection of Coranderrk Street and Parkes Way to control the westbound right turn from Parkes Way into Coranderrk Street and manage traffic flow.

For five consecutive weekends, there will be no westbound access from Parkes Way into Coranderrk Street. This means vehicles will be unable to turn right at the roundabout intersection. Detour signage will be in place, and vehicles will be detoured via Edinburgh Avenue.

Westbound access will be closed from midnight (12am) each Friday until 6am on the Monday. The affected weekends are (weather permitting):

•           Midnight Friday 16 September to 6am Monday 19 September

•           Midnight Friday 23 September to 6am Monday 26 September

•           Midnight Friday 7 October to 6am Monday 10 October

•           Midnight Friday 14 October to 6am Monday 17 October

•           Midnight Friday 21 October to 6am Monday 24 October.

If you visit Floriade on one of these weekends, be mindful of the changed traffic arrangements. For more information about access and parking for Floriade, visit www.floriadeaustralia.com.

The site compound for this project is in the back south-west corner of the car park opposite CIT Reid. This will temporarily remove 30 parking spaces from the 690-space car park. These are expected to be reinstated before the end of the year as the project concludes.

Vernon Circle traffic lights and City Hill footpath

Temporary traffic lights will be installed on the northern side of Vernon Circle to allow drivers to safely turn right onto Constitution Avenue and London Circuit. This work is expected to take eight to 12 weeks.

To support walking and cycling access around the city area, the ACT Government will construct a permanent new footpath and pedestrian signals between Constitution Avenue and Edinburgh Avenue.

Raising London Circuit project

Construction will soon begin to raise London Circuit, which the government claims will better connect the city and the lake, and enable light rail Stage 2 to be built.

Car parks across the city will be used as construction site compounds and construction work sites.

Parking capacity will be reduced or removed at four car parks; fenced-off areas will be used for construction activities and for site offices, storage, deliveries, amenities, and machinery and worker parking.

The four car parks are:

1.         ACT Government surface City Hill car park (corner of Constitution Avenue and London Circuit)

2.         ACT Government surface car park at 41 Marcus Clarke Street

3.         ACT Government Acton waterfront surface car park

4.         ACT Government surface car park at the corner of London Circuit and Edinburgh Avenue.

Parking spaces will be removed as site compounds and work sites are established. The main site office compound in the City Hill car park will be set up at the end of September.

Parking spaces at the remaining three car parks will be removed or reduced later in 2022. Further information will be provided ahead of the closures.

Upgrades within Verity and Odgers Lanes

Verity and Odgers Lanes are getting a makeover with more outdoor dining, lighting, heritage tree protection, new paving, new landscaping, and stormwater upgrades, a government spokesperson said.

Before stormwater is upgraded in each lane, watermain infrastructure running along London Circuit must be relocated, and new stormwater pipes built.

London Circuit will be closed for two consecutive weekends. This is likely to occur on the weekends of 8, 9 and 15, 16 October (weather permitting).

The site compound for this project is in the Hobart Place car park on the corner of London Circuit. This has temporarily removed access to 10 spaces in the 110-space car park. These are expected to be reinstated in early 2023 when the project is completed.

“There are going to be a range of impacts in coming years to support the construction of significant infrastructure projects in and around the city precinct,” a government spokesperson said. “We thank Canberrans for their patience as this work takes place.”
