As part of the reform of the ACT Governmentโs planning system, draft documents to guide commercial development and redevelopment in Canberraโs city centre are now available for community consideration and feedback.
The draft City Plan and Urban Design Framework set out a range of proposals to ensure the city centre is a lively, inclusive, accessible, and safe place for residents, businesses, and visitors.
Mick Gentleman, ACT Minister for Planning and Land Management, said Canberra is one of the most liveable cities in the world, and the government plans to keep it that way.
โAs our population grows and community priorities change, we must adapt our approach to planning so that climate change, sustainability, public transport, and active travel are at the forefront,โ Mr Gentleman said.
โThe draft City Plan builds on the history of our city centre and its role in Canberransโ lives. It then proposes a range of ways to support business innovation, attract visitors, and provide for the growing residential population.

โIt also incorporates long-term ACT Government projects, such as the Acton Waterfront redevelopment, the raising of London Circuit for Stage 2A of the Light Rail, and the revitalisation of the Canberra Theatre precinct.
โAdditionally, the plan has a focus on how the restaurants, bars, and venues that comprise our night-time economy can be supported in balance with the needs of other users of the city centre.
โThe Urban Design Framework that accompanies the City Plan sets out standards for building, street, and open space design that private and public developers will need to adhere to.
โTogether, these draft plans represent a vision for a city centre that will cement our city centreโs position as a nation-leading cultural and economic hub,โ Mr Gentleman said.
The ACT Government asks Canberrans to review the draft City Plan and Urban Design Framework and share their feedback about the things they most value in the city centre, what they would like to see in the future, and whether these drafts meet those expectations.
