Woman charged with manslaughter of Matthew McLuckie may never face trial

The ABC has reported the 20-year-old woman accused of driving 177km per hour on the wrong side of Hindmarsh Drive and killing Canberra man Matthew McLuckie “may never be fit to enter a plea”.

Shakira Adams faces nine charges in the ACT Magistrates Court, including manslaughter, aggravated reckless driving, unlicensed driving, driving a motor vehicle without consent, and culpable driving causing death.

Ms Adams was extracted from her vehicle on the night of the crash with life-threatening injuries, and she continues to require medical care.

ACT police said her charges were laid in consultation with the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) and her defence lawyers.

The charges were laid yesterday, 7 February, but due to Ms Adams’ sustained injuries, she was unable to attend the hearing.

Her lawyer said there’s likely to be a question about whether she is fit to enter a plea, which is likely to be investigated in the Supreme Court.

Matthew’s father, Tom McLuckie, told Canberra Daily his family were briefed the day before by the DPP, so they had a “fairly good idea” of what was going to happen in court.

“It was expected and not a surprise,” he said.

Mr McLuckie reiterated that he holds no anger towards the young woman involved.

“It is what it is. Nothing will change the events of what happened,” he said.

Mr McLuckie said considering the woman inflicted considerable injuries to herself in the crash, “it’s not right to imprison her”. He added this shows a “fair and just” legal system.

Matthew McLuckie, also 20-years-old, was driving home from his job at Canberra Airport at the time of the crash on the night of Thursday 19 May 2022.
