To the editor: Plastic waste must be cut

The Editor

It was disturbing to read that incredibly nearly all (84 per cent) of Australia’s 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste ends up in landfill each year.

Fortunately, this was balanced in the same article by the good news that the Australian National University is working to find a way to “infinitely recycle” every kind of plastic (“ANU’s greatest minds achieving world-first plastic solution”, 1 October 2021).

In the meantime, we should all follow the four Rs: Review, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. If we don’t, today’s plastic will end up in waterways and our unique Australian wildlife will pay the price.
