Alcohol-impaired driver collides with police vehicle

An alcohol-impaired driver with a blood alcohol level more than three times the legal limit has received an immediate suspension notice after his car collided with an unmarked police vehicle in Garran overnight.

About 9.10pm last night, Saturday 16 January, a collision occurred at the intersection of Hindmarsh Drive and Palmer Street, Garran.

Police will allege a silver station wagon turned in front of an unmarked police vehicle contrary to the traffic signals, with the police vehicle rolling and coming to rest approximately 20 metres east of the intersection.

The police vehicle was not under urgent duty driving circumstances and did not have lights and sirens activated.

The two police officers in the police vehicle received minor injuries – with one requiring extraction from the vehicle by ACT Fire and Rescue.

The driver of the silver station wagon was uninjured, however, breath analysis confirmed a blood alcohol level of 0.163.

He was issued an immediate suspension notice and further investigations about the incident are being conducted by ACT Road Policing’s Major Collision Team.

ACT Policing reminds all drivers that “drink driving puts both yourself and other drivers at significant risk. The decision is simple – drink or drive.”

Anyone with information about this collision that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website. Please quote reference 6716090. Information can be provided anonymously.
