Cut down on Christmas waste

Around 81 per cent of Australians are concerned about the amount of waste involved in Christmas, according to a report from Crowd.DNA. Care Australia reported we use an excess of 150,000km of wrapping paper – enough to go around the earth almost four times – and around five million tonnes of food is sent to landfill. Taking the crown as the worst offenders are packaging, food and present waste, and single-use plastics. One way to cut down during the ‘most wasteful time of year’ is to opt against plastic packaging when online shopping and sending gifts by using Hero Packaging, designed to decompose instead of sitting in landfill. So far, the company estimates they’ve saved around 15 million plastic mailers entering waste streams across the globe.

“You don’t need to go to extremes like cancelling Christmas to save the environment,” says co-founder Anaita. “But you can put in more effort to consume mindfully and ethically – and that starts with choosing to go plastic-free where possible. By taking one step at a time with small things like swapping your plastic bag for a compostable mailer, we can collectively make a big difference to our planet.”
