Landcare ACT to host LGBTree planting day in the bush capital

The Canberra region’s LGBTQIA+ community is invited to a one-day volunteer tree planting activity at Stony Creek Nature Reserve at Mt Stromlo, taking place later this month.

The ACT Government, Greening Australia, Landcare Australia, Landcare ACT and Meridian ACT are hosting a volunteer tree planting event for the community on Sunday 22 May from 8.30am to 1.30pm.

No prior experience is necessary, just a pair of gardening gloves, and free lunch and entertainment are included on the day.

“Following on from the success of Landcare for Singles event last year, this event will be fun, inclusive, and accessible, while raising awareness and recruiting valuable environmental volunteers,” said Minister for the Environment, Rebecca Vassarotti.

Ms Vassarotti said the volunteer event aims to simultaneously foster connections within the LQBTQIA+ community and plant up to 1000 trees and shrubs that will help to conserve the endangered box gum woodlands.

“While you help care for endangered woodlands in the ACT, this community event is all about selfcare too,” she said.

Meridian CEO Philippa Moss said the organisation is thrilled to support the event.

“Just as it takes many trees to create a forest, it takes people to create a community. It requires nurturing and hard work, and it requires many hands,” said Ms Moss.

“It is everybody’s responsibility; everyone can play a part and the results can be astonishing. We are eager to get our hands in the soil and help regenerate this little patch of Ngunnawal country. We can watch it grow and have a real sense of pride in what we can achieve together.

“Meridian and Landcare welcome everyone, especially people of diverse genders, sexualities, relationships, and proud allies. All are welcome, let’s get planting!”

Registration is essential to participate and can be found via Eventbrite. For further information, contact ACT Natural Resource Management at [email protected].
