Local businesses making the switch

In what is a win-win for the community at large, ActewAGLโ€™s Big Business Light Switch has been helping mitigate the ever-rising energy costs associated with doing business for entrepreneurs across Canberra.

Having launched the program in early 2017, to date over 2,000 local business have upgraded their lights through the Big Business Light Switch.

The vast array of participating businesses ranges from cafes to the RSPCA and charities such as St Vincent De Paul shopfronts.

The program offers free or subsidised energy efficient lighting with the aim of reducing power usage and, in turn, generating long-term savings for business owners.

Owner and Chief Instructor of Canberra Karate Academy, Steve Parr, has taken part in the program, having had 188 lights in his facility upgraded for an annual saving of $3,771.32.

Mr Parr said heโ€™s chuffed with the lighting upgrade.

โ€œWe had over 180 old, inefficient, energy-draining fluoro lights across the studio upgraded and now we have a much cleaner, more consistent and professional looking studio.

โ€œThis is a wonderful program offered by ActewAGL and I have already recommended the Big Business Light Switch to other local business owners,โ€ he said.

Manager of Energy Efficiency at ActewAGL Todd Eagles said the new LED lights that replace the old fluorescent lighting use less energy and require significantly less maintenance, which translates into real dollar savings.

โ€œThe best part of upgrading to LEDs is the financial savings that can be re-invested into their own business giving them a competitive edge.

โ€œOver 2,000 Canberra businesses have had their lights upgraded by ActewAGL. Schools, cafes, retail and warehouses are now using less energy to make their businesses brighter.

โ€œFor most businesses, the Big Business Light Switch is free. In the cases where there are charges for specific LED lights or specialist installation equipment, the payback is under 1.5 years, a really good investment,โ€ he said.
