Man charged with murder following Kingston Hotel death

A Canberra man has been charged with murder, following the death of a 44-year-old man at the Kingston Hotel on Sunday 5 July.

The 35-year-old man was arrested yesterday (Thursday 9 July) around 1.20pm in the City, and was expected to face court this morning.

ACT Policing have said 44-year-old Warren Hordpenko, from Dalmeny on the NSW South Coast, died after an altercation in the hotel’s poolroom.

Acting Detective Superintendent Matt Reynolds said police aren’t aware of any previous relationship between the two men; however, he said earlier in the evening of 5 July there was a “meeting” between the two.

“As a result of that incident, the 35-year-old male later returned to the Kingston Hotel where the incident took place,” he said.

He said the incident occurred in the poolroom, where there is no coverage or CCTV cameras, however, police were able to identify the alleged offender through the “numerous other CCTV cameras” at the hotel.

ACT Policing called for anyone who may have any further information or footage to contact police.

The victim was working in the ACT before he died. An autopsy has been conducted, and police have said there are preliminary findings as to the cause of death, however, these are still being investigated.
