Sanjay Kumar’s culinary journey leads to Master Cook Challenge

In the heart of Canberra, where diverse cultures converge, one name stands out as a beacon of authentic Indian cuisine, community engagement, and culinary excellence: Sanjay Kumar, the founder and culinary visionary behind the brand Daana since 2015 and more recently The Abbey by Daana, under Gravitas Hospitality. Sanjay has not only mastered the art of creating delectable cuisine but also enriches the local community through his culinary expertise and philanthropic endeavours.

Sanjay believes in the transformative power of food. For him, it’s not just about flavours and ingredients; it’s about connecting people, preserving traditions and uplifting the community. With years of experience as a leading restaurateur as his canvas, he continues to be a source of inspiration, enriching the community with every dish he creates and every initiative he undertakes.

Sanjay’s commitment to community engagement is far-reaching. He actively participates in local events, workshops and food festivals, celebrating culinary diversity and fostering a sense of unity within the Canberra community. Moreover, he shares his culinary knowledge through cooking classes and workshops, promoting cultural exchange and a deeper understanding of Indian traditions.

Sustainable sourcing is a cornerstone of his approach, collaborating with local farmers and suppliers to support sustainable and ethical practices that benefit the local economy and environment.

His dedication extends to charitable endeavours, where he contributes his culinary talents to charity events and fundraisers, using his skills to make a difference in the lives of those in need.

Through his leadership, he has actively reduced food waste by donating surplus food to local shelters and community organisations, ensuring that wholesome meals reach those who need them the most. Furthermore, Sanjay’s commitment to culinary mentorship fosters a sense of community, as he nurtures aspiring chefs, providing mentorship and opportunities for them to learn and grow in the culinary arts, thus supporting the next generation of chefs.

Next on the menu in Sanjay’s pursuit of connection through food is to participate in the Master Cook Challenge. Part of Canberra Hospital Foundation’s CAN GIVE DAY, the Master Cook Challenge will see four chefs compete in the second Master Cook Challenge. Reaching out to their networks for support, the chefs will compete in three categories: Signature Dish, Taste Test, and People’s Choice.

Three other die-hard foodies will be joining Sanjay in this year’s challenge including Tashi, Sous Chef at the award winning Lamshed’s restaurant.

Whether you’re a food enthusiast, a culinary novice, or simply looking for an evening of delicious entertainment, you’re invited to become part of the live audience as these top cooks duke it out.

With live cooking action, foodie trivia and taste testing, this is an event like no other and is not to be missed.

You’ll witness the magic of the kitchen, taste the creations, take part in foodie trivia and experience the excitement of the challenge. Live! But it’s not just about food. Your presence and support will help raise funds to support patients from Canberra and the surrounding region who find themselves unwell and seeking healthcare.
