ACT seniors invited to play outside at Haig Park

Spring is finally here, and seniors are being encouraged to step outdoors this Saturday to the Never Too Old to Play Outside event at Haig Park in Braddon.

After a cold and wet winter, COTA ACT and the University of Canberra recognise the importance of our older generations getting back outside. They have worked together to present an afternoon of free information, entertainment, and socialising.

There are many benefits to spending time outside as we enter our golden years. Some studies have shown that staying physically and mentally active later in life reduces the risk of dementia, while sunlight can also boost your vitamin D, enhance mood, and strengthen bones.

Getting your recommended 30 minutes of moderate activity every day will be a breeze at Saturday’s funday. There are so many activities, information stalls, and food options available you will be zigzagging across the park.

With live music, games, performances, food, and much more happening throughout the afternoon, the outside event offers something for the whole family.

Get your body moving with Tai Chi, Musical Moves for Seniors, and Zest: Dance for Wellbeing.

Spark the mind with a charcoal painting workshop, arts and crafts, or giant boardgames.

Hunt for treasures in the rummage sale, restore a loved item at the repair café, or get your picture turned into a piece of art at the photo memory booth.

If any of those dreaded winter chills are still hanging around, the fire pits complete with marshmallows and mulled wine, are sure to send them packing.

The event is also dog-friendly so grab your pooch, your favourite senior and soak up some fun in the sun.

Spend some time in the sun at Never Too Old to Play Outside, Haig Park, Braddon this Saturday 3 September 12-4pm; cotaact.org.au
