The winter school holidays are on, and our personal freedoms are still intact, so make some plans for the first weekend of July and get out and about as there’s still plenty on across Canberra!

Step right up and see the Sesame Street Circus Spectacular – all weekend

The enormously popular Sesame Street Circus Spectacular has come to town, ready to wow local  audiences of all ages.

Running until 2 August, this 90-minute show features all your favourite Sesame Street characters including Elmo, Cookie Monster, Bert and Ernie, and more

Every element within the show was newly developed for this locally written and produced tour.

It even includes the original Sesame Street voices recorded in New York especially for this production.

The Sesame Street Circus Spectacular will be performed under the big top at Majura Park Shopping Centre all weekend; see the full list of performances here.


Story Walk with Maura Pierlot – 3 and 5 July

Hear award-winning picture book, The Trouble in Tune Town come to life on a Story Walk with Canberra author, Maura Pierlot.

Guided walks through City Walk and Civic Square are scheduled this weekend for 11am on 3 and 5 July, starting at Canberra Museum & Gallery.

Canberra REP stages The Governor’s Family – all weekend

A staging of the critically acclaimed Australian play by Canberra Rep is on at Canberra REP Theatre, Acton, 2-17 July, Wednesday to Saturday.

Set in Sydney in 1897, Beatrix Christian’s play explores a remarkable time and place in the context of Australian history. Click here for more information and ticketing.


The award-winning American Psycho: The Musical – 2-3 July

Whether you’re hip or square, get along to slick, award-winning production of the Bret Easton Ellis classic and 2000 film (pictured) continuing tonight and tomorrow at The Playhouse, Civic.

Aimed at an adult audience (definitely not family friendly), this slick, award-winning production of the Bret Easton Ellis classic plays 2 and 3 July at The Playhouse, Civic.

Based on Bret Easton Ellis’ 1991 best-seller American Psycho and the 2000 film of the same name, this dark, comedic musical tells the story of Patrick Bateman.

This BB-Arts Entertainment & Two Doors Production has won 9 Sydney Theatre Awards including Best Production. Get in and see it while you can; tickets here.


Dendy’s Disney Classics Festival – 3 and 4 July

Lion King
Hakuna Matata! The Lion King is one of four movies screening at Dendy Canberra this weekend as part of their Disney Classics Festival.

Give your Disney + subscription a rest and go see any of The Lady and the Tramp, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, and The Emperor’s New Groove on the big screen at Dendy Canberra.

With tickets priced at $8 for Club Dendy members and $10 for general admission, keen Disney families may even book a double feature!

Hellenic Club celebrates NAIDOC – all weekend

The Hellenic Club of Canberra will celebrate a different culture with an Indigenous exhibition to mark NAIDOC celebrations.

This is the first time the Greek-aligned club will host an exhibition celebrating Australia’s First Nations people. 

Artists Anthony Best, Natasha Best and Rayne Orion Huddleston, will have more than 60 works displayed from 2-11 July in the Hellenic Club Woden first floor foyer.

Hellenic Club CEO, Ian Cameron, said it was time to celebrate the traditional owners of the land.

“Our club is about celebrating a deep pride in our Greek culture and history – even though we are living away from our place of origin,” he said.

“We understand the connection to where we come from and that the sense of belonging to a place is real.”

Popular Canberra winter attraction, Wintervention, is back for 2021.

Civic Square will be turned into an open-air ice-skating arena until Sunday 11 July for the entire school holiday period.

Take in the true joys of winter and embrace the entertainment, activities, food, and market stalls. The rink is open 10am to 8pm Sunday to Thursday, and 10am to 9pm Fridays and Saturdays. Visitors must book their skate sessions.
