To the editor: Let’s focus on making the NDIS work

It was disappointing to read such an unbalanced article from Bill Stefaniak on the NDIS (‘Is the NDIS sustainable?’, CW 18 August 2022, p8). He focussed on crime, quoted a few large numbers, and handpicked examples, then dismissed the NDIS as unsustainable. Another example of why every politician should spend a day in the shoes of a person with disability. Disability can affect anyone, anytime, so put the politicking aside – this is about humans facing challenges that most can’t imagine.

As parents of a child with a complex disability, we understand that the NDIS has its issues, and we, too, are concerned that some lowlifes seem to think that any large government scheme is fair game.

We also know that the NDIS makes a positive difference to many in our community every day. It can enable people to access their home safely, manage personal care with dignity, and participate in education, work and community.

So let’s focus our efforts on making the NDIS work, rather than flippantly dismissing it “unsustainable” and, in the process, tarnishing the most vulnerable in our community as criminals.
