Workshops to help Canberrans cultivate their gardens

Throughout 2024, Canberrans will be able to improve their gardening techniques at regular workshops hosted by the Suburban Land Agency Display Village in Whitlam.

The monthly Growing Food Through the Seasons workshops will cover gardening basics including different planting techniques, composting, soil health, and more.

Novice gardeners are encouraged to attend. The workshops will be run by Fiona Buining, from the Ainslie Urban Farm, an experienced educator who is passionate about introducing more people to the many benefits of locally grown food.

“The workshops are focused on helping you get the best from Canberra’s unique growing climate, teaching you when and what to plant for a supply of produce year-round,” Yvette Berry, ACT Minister for Suburban Development, said.

“You can learn how to grow delicious food in your own backyard. The Growing Food Through the Seasons workshop series held monthly will help you grow a bountiful food garden all year long.”

The workshops begin on Saturday 3 February with ‘Planning Your Winter Food Garden’. It will cover the basics of planning early for a winter garden and which vegetables grow well in a Canberra winter. Best of all, you will get to plant some seeds to take home!

“Growing your own food is one of the most rewarding, affordable, and exciting things you can do in your home garden,” Ms Berry said.

“As a keen gardener myself, I encourage Canberrans to make the most of these fantastic, accessible workshops.”
