Canberra Daily’s 2022 in review: August

In August, heavy rainfall continued across Canberra – just four days in, emergency services had received over 120 calls for assistance. A single shooter was apprehended at Canberra airport – thankfully with no one injured.     In good news, sustainability was in the spotlight, both through Canberra’s prolific reuse centre, the Green Shed, and Strathnairn’s sustainable home, The Banksia. Northside received their first Men’s Table, letting men of all ages know they’re not alone.

Single shooter arrested as Canberra Airport evacuated

On 14 August, a man was arrested after shots were fired inside Canberra Airport, which was evacuated with flights stuck on the tarmac. ACT Policing was called to Canberra Airport around 1.30pm. Shortly after, the 63-year-old man was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered. In December it was revealed the gunman, Ali Rachid Ammoun, was on parole after serving a sentence in a WA jail for attempted murder of his ex-wife.

The Green Shed recovers 8,000 tonnes of ‘waste’ a year – and proves that one man’s trash is another’s treasure. CW’s Nick Fuller dived into Canberra’s most prolific reuse centre, in which 20,000 visitors snatch up ‘stuff’ saved from landfill every week.

CW caught up with Warren (78) and Jeff (49), two Canberra men about to attend the first ‘entrée night’ for the newly formed Eastlake Gungahlin Men’s Table. Over dinner once a month, Men’s Table creates a unique, safe environment for men to share openly about their lives, the highs, and the lows.
